About The Brand
In 2019 I was living in Brooklyn, York, working as a headhunter for large Real Estate companies. That year, with a desire make something special for myself to attend Envision Festival in Costa Rica, I began watching Youtube videos and purchased a sewing machine. From the moment I first put on that kimono at the festival, I felt a sense or pride, style, and just flat out coolness that I had never experienced before in my life.
Fast forward to the COVID-19 pandemic and I had more time than I knew what to do with. However, I still had a full time job running my own recruiting agency. I decided to devote all of my free time to sewing and selling my work at underground warehouse raves and rooftops in Brooklyn. After 2 years of sewing every single piece myself, I started working with a professional seamstress and that is when everything changed.
In 2022 I moved to San Francisco to open my first store in the historic Haight/Ashbury area. As an artist I now feel like my work is right at home, being displayed every day in a place that was culturally established as a street for expression, love, and creativity.
This all wouldn't have been possible without me growing up in Reno, Nevada and deciding in 2011 to attend the Burning Man Festival in the Black Rock Desert of Nevada. Its the most special place in the world and gave me everything in my life. Lifelong friends, an extreme appreciation for bootstrapped art projects, and an unwavering drive for creativity.
Today you can find my designs at our popups at festivals like Lightning in a Bottle, Desert Hearts, All Day I Dream, Electric Forest, Northern Nights, Gem and Jam, Cascade Equinox, Same Same but Different, and others.
My taste in fabrics and fur knows no bounds. I can only assume my inspiration comes from my desire to emulate all the bright colors and LEDs we see at festivals. Much of my work is inspired by the desert landscape surrounding my home in Nevada and the Southwestern motifs and textiles that are so prevalent in that part of the country.
Today, I still work on samples and new designs myself and sew special pieces out of my home 1 by 1. I also design or source every fabric myself and also frequently use vintage materials when I find really cool stuff. I make some of my own fur now, and my desire is to eventually have an entire line that every fabric/fur is 100% designed in house.
Kimono Dave brand garments are thoughtfully handmade with designer fabrics and the highest quality 100% faux fur in Los Angeles, San Francisco, and New York. As my brand has grown I have added another line called DV8 which is manufactured in China.
I've been told that my clothing has a power all of its own. People have told me it gives them super powers or that they just feel very confident for the first time. This is the same reason I continued chasing this path and I can tell you it is true.
Dope shit till the day I die.
